Ensign Wills and LT(jg) Pickens Enjoy Lunch
Ensign Frances Wills (left) and Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Harriet Ida Pickens enjoy lunch following their graduation from the Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School (WR) at Northampton, Massachusetts, circa December 1944. Pickens, who’d been a public health administrator prior to joining, and Wills, who’d been a social worker, distinguished themselves as the first black women to receive their commissions in the U.S. Navy.
