Marjorie “Marjie” McKenney was born in Brunswick, Maine on July 4th, 1923, and as a child spent her summers volunteering at Sea Pines camp for kids on Long Island. Just a year after graduating from Amherst High School, Marjie continued that spirit of volunteering and traveled to Boston to enlist in the Navy WAVES. After reporting to Hunter College for assessment testing, she was immediately deployed to Norman Oklahoma to attend Aviation Machinist training.
Within six months, Marjie graduated and deployed to Naval Air Station Jacksonville as Aviation Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class Marjorie McKenney, USNR(W). Spending her tour keeping the boys in the air, she loved her job as an AMM3c and was promoted in rank to AMM2c prior to the end of the war. Marjie met her husband-to-be Harry Stone, also an Aviation Machinist’s Mate at NAS Jacksonville, and they married in March of 1944.
Today, 95-year-old Marjie volunteers at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, and when she’s not volunteering you can find her in the pool, working out with her Pensacola Pirates Masters Swimming teammates. Marjie’s motto is “The last one alive, wins!”
