Helen Lorraine Kinnear was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, on September 23, 1922, and served with both the Navy and the Army during World War II. She first enlisted in the Navy WAVES, but when her mother became ill she received a discharge and returned home to care for her. After her mother recovered, Helen wanted to rejoin but was afraid the Navy wouldn’t let her back in, so she enlisted in the Army instead, using her stepfather’s last name, “Boring”.
Helen met and married John Anthony Paige while serving at Fort Benning, Georgia. She passed away in Baltimore, Maryland, on November 11, 2012.
