WAVES Officers Watch Ship Coming Out of Building Dock

The USS Franklin (CV-13) is floated out of her building dock immediately after christening, at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, on October 14, 1943. WAVES officers in the foreground watch the ship’s arrival. The WAVES’ Director, Lieutenant Commander Mildred H. McAfee, USNR, was the USS Franklin’s sponsor.
