WAVES Hospital Apprentice Visits With Patient Outdoors

With an afternoon off duty, WAVES Hospital Apprentice 1st Class Reida McNeill of the U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, California, spends a sunny hour outside with a patient, Seaman 1st Class Richard Insko, circa spring 1945. Seaman Insko was recovering from injuries received on board his ship off Luzon. HA1c McNeill is one of 1000 WAVES stationed at the San Diego Naval Hospital. She had enlisted in the Women’s Reserve in September 1944. Note the well-polished Dahlgren 12-pounder boat howitzer, of Civil War vintage.
