Portrait of WAVES Director Mildred H. McAfee

Portrait photograph, taken in 1942-43, of the first WAVES Director, Lieutenant Commander Mildred H. McAfee. During World War II, McAfee took a leave of absence from her position as President of Wellesley College to direct the newly formed WAVES. She was the first woman commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve and the first woman to receive the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.
